A striking Cornish Arts & Crafts fireside box possibly by J&F Pool of Hayle in Cornwall, crafted in richly patinated hammered copper. The sloping lid is adorned with stylised repoussé decoration centred around a stunning turquoise heart motif, while the body displays a beautifully textured hand-worked surface. Raised on simple cast iron supports, the piece combines honest craftsmanship with decorative presence, very much in keeping with the Arts & Crafts ethos.
Originally designed for coal or logs, it makes an equally appealing storage piece today. J&F Pool were noted makers of hand-wrought copperware in Cornwall from the late 19th century, producing a wide range of domestic and fireside items.
A characterful and functional example, with a warm, aged surface and good overall condition consistent with age and use.
